Self-Mastery is about Noticing Your Red Flags Too

Kamilah MS

As humans, we all have a set of behaviors, habits, and tendencies that can either help or hinder our growth and progress in life. These red flags are like warning signs that signal us to take a step back and evaluate our choices and actions. But what happens when we fail to notice or acknowledge our own red flags?

Self-mastery is a crucial element of personal growth and development, but it’s also something that is very difficult to achieve. One of the biggest challenges in achieving self-mastery is identifying our own red flags. These are the behaviors, thoughts, and habits that get in the way of our growth and prevent us from achieving our full potential.

Identifying our own red flags is difficult because it requires us to be introspective and honest with ourselves. It’s much easier to notice the red flags of others, whether it’s their bad habits, negative attitudes, or self-destructive behavior. But when it comes to ourselves, we often struggle to see our own issues and shortcomings.

This is due to what psychologists call the “fundamental attribution error.” This is a cognitive bias that causes us to overemphasize the role of personality or internal factors in explaining other people’s behavior, while ignoring the role of situational or external factors. In other words, we tend to assume that other people’s behavior is a reflection of their character, while our own behavior is a result of circumstances beyond our control.

So, how can we overcome this bias and identify our own red flags? The first step is to practice mindfulness and self-awareness. This means paying attention to our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in different situations. We can reflect on our reactions to certain events and ask ourselves why we responded in a particular way.

Another technique is to focus on our triggers. These are the things that set us off and lead to negative behavior or emotions. By identifying our triggers, we can learn to avoid situations that are likely to trigger us and develop strategies for managing our reactions when we are exposed to them.

It’s also important to seek feedback from others. We may not be able to see our own red flags, but others can often see them quite clearly. By asking for feedback from trusted friends, family members, or colleagues, we can gain valuable insights into our behavior and gain a fresh perspective on our challenges.

Ultimately, achieving self-mastery requires a commitment to ongoing personal growth and development. By cultivating self-awareness, seeking feedback from others, and developing strategies for managing our triggers and red flags, we can overcome the fundamental attribution error and become the best version of ourselves.

The answer is simple – we stagnate. We remain stuck in the same patterns of behavior, unable to make any meaningful progress towards our goals or vision for our lives. Self-mastery is all about recognizing these red flags and taking control of our thoughts, emotions, and actions.

Taking a moment to reflect on your own red flags can be a powerful exercise in self-awareness and growth. Perhaps you have a tendency to procrastinate when faced with a difficult task, or maybe you struggle to stay focused for long periods of time. It could be something as simple as getting easily distracted by social media or needing to constantly check your phone.

Whatever your red flags may be, the key is to notice them without judgement or self-criticism. Instead, use this awareness as an opportunity to create a plan for how you can overcome these behaviors and replace them with healthier, more productive habits.

Self-mastery is a lifelong journey, and it begins with recognizing your own red flags. So take some time today to reflect on your own tendencies and habits and commit to making the necessary changes to become the best version of yourself.
