Why Exam Results Don’t Really Matter in Life?

Wait a minute? What is all this saying and buzz about reminding parents in Singapore that academic results don’t matter?

Some without children would probably not understand why it is even necessary to remind parents about this.

Here is the news, some parents can be overly paranoid about their children’s grades especially when parents place their pride and worth to that of their child’s academic performances.

A friend of mine who is an educator shared that parents, especially those who have children surrounded by academic over achievers tend to succumb to peer pressure, they would compare their child to their child’s classmates and there would also be competitions amongst parents themselves, and this could lead to adverse effects on their children.

I do agree that exams don’t matter because:

they don’t guarantee overall success in life.

I am sure no one would want to live a life where they are only successful in one area and failing miserably on other areas that truly matters such as marriage, communication with others, leadership, financial literacy, survival skills, crisis management, self-regulation and more.

Your child probably would grow up to pursue a career that may not necessarily be taught in school.

Ask any adults, most of them did not pursue a career that they had majored back in university.

When one can innovate a career for himself out of nothing, he is a thought leader, and parents should also cultivate this aspect of learning too – creativity. Afterall, being an entrepreneur can give your child a higher chance of earning way more than what the grades on paper can give, given the right mindset, environment and attributes.

People won’t remember how well you scored in school.

As adults now, do we really care about how well others performed in school? No.

In developed countries, the rate of unemployment for graduates are increasing at an alarming rate.

Job climate is ever-changing especially with the rise of technological advancements. Our certs and skills will always need to be updated to adjust to the economic demands of the 21st century.

What really matters is the ability to persevere and adapt to the changes in life and we can see that adults too are struggling in this arena.

There you go, the top three reasons why I personally think that academic achievements don’t really matter because there are other aspects in life that one should focus on and one of which is – personal development and growth.

Are you ready?
